A ‘Beat the Pro’ competition at an annual credit industry Golf Day sponsored by the B2B marketing communications agency Gravity Global has raised more than £300 for the Royal Air Forces ex-Prisoners of War Association.

Golfers at Luton Hoo taking part in the Credit Services Association (CSA) event were tasked with taking on the professional on a tricky par 3 over water, with Gravity promising a donation for each successful challenger. More than a dozen players achieved the feat, with one fourball taking two attempts and contributing its own donation to the charity.

Sean Feast, a Director of Gravity, presented a cheque to the Association’s President, Air Commodore Charles Clarke OBE: “We are proud to support the RAF ex-POW Association who do much good work ‘under the radar’ to help its members and the families of those shot down during the second world war and since, including those aircrew brought down in Gulf War One.

“It was funny to see how competitive the professional became, and even funnier to see some of the golfers take him on having had a glass or two of champagne beforehand.”

Air Commodore Clarke, who was himself shot down in 1944, thanked Sean and the Gravity team for their support: “We are a small and little known charity and this donation will go a long way to providing welfare assistance for members and immediate family in need of support.”

The Royal Air Forces ex-Prisoners of War Association was formed in the mid-1950s by ex-POWs of Stalag Luft 1, 3 and 6. The first chairman was James (Dixie) Deans, a Sergeant pilot shot down in September 1940.

Membership of the Association is open to all those who served in the RAF or Allied Air Forces and who were prisoners of war. The majority are from WW2, but the seven RAF aircrew shot down in Iraq also joined in 1991. The Association organises social events and welfare assistance for members and immediate family. It provides a marching contingent in the Remembrance Parade at the Cenotaph each year.
